Services related to rental car use

One-way Rental

One-way rentals are available nationwide. One-way rental allows you to return the car to a different location than the one pick-up.

ETC Card Rental

ETC card rental service is available at rental locations.
The toll fee will be calculated and transferred to your ETC card when you return your car.

ETC card rental service

ETC card rental services are available at major rental offices nationwide (not available at rental offices on smaller islands where ETC systems do not exist).

What is ETC?

ETC (electronic toll collection) systems allow motorists to pay tolls without stopping at toll booths. Toll fees are charged based on the usage recorded on the ETC card's IC chip.

1. How to make a reservation

You can select an ETC card when making a reservation.

2. Card rental fee

・330 yen including tax, up to 7 days

・1,100 yen including tax, 8 days or more

3. How to settle toll fees

It will be calculated using the toll and the IC chip of your ETC card when you return your car. We will print out the actual toll and send it to you. These charges must be paid in cash or by major credit card.

To use the Expressway Pass, you need to rent an ETC card from Nippon Rent-A-Car. You can also apply for these programs at the rental office when you pick up your car.

Notes on using the ETC card rental service

This service is available only after reading and agreeing to the terms and conditions of Nippon Rent-A-Car 's ETC card rental service.

1. During the rental period of the ETC card, please follow the precautions regarding the use of the ETC system and use and manage the card. If your card is used by a third party during the rental period, you will be responsible for paying any tolls.

2. The toll fee is calculated based on the data recorded on the IC chip and displayed at the pass gate. Fare adjustments for specific cases, e.g. re-entry due to road closures, discounts from other road companies, etc. are not available with rented ETC cards.

3. If payment is insufficient, we may charge additional tolls on the day after you return the car.

  • ・If undeclared tolls are discovered
  • ・If the usage history/toll fee is not recognized due to a defect in the ETC card or card reader
  • ・If the toll is changed due to the expressway company's reasons
  • ・If the car is return with the tolls unreadable for some reason

4. If your ETC card is lost or stolen, please report it to the receiving office. ETC card tolls up to the day after reporting such an incident will not be charged unless there is intentionality or gross negligence.

5. If your ETC card is lost, stolen, damaged or deformed, a compensation fee of 3,000 yen will be charged.

6. If your ETC card is lost, stolen, damaged or deformed and the toll cannot be calculated, a deposit of 10,000 yen will be charged from your credit card for the toll. When we receive an invoice from each road company at a later date, we will adjust the balance or make an additional charge via your credit card account.

7. If a road company inquires about ETC card users during/after the rental period, we may contact you.

8. Please note that if you do not return the rented ETC card within the due date, we may notify each road company to cancel the validity of the ETC card.

9. Nippon Rent-A-Car is not responsible for resolving disputes or compensating for damages arising from the use of the ETC system. In such cases, please submit it to each road company.


・Use of ETC is subject to the terms of use of the ETC system.
