Notice regarding using a rental car with My number card as driving license

Dear Customer,

Thank you for always using Nippon Rent-A-Car.

Due to amendments to the Road Traffic Act, My number card as driving license (※1) will go into effect nationwide in Japan from（Mon）March 24, 2025.
Nippon Rent-A-Car allows you to rent a car with My number card as driving license, but if you only have it, please be sure to read the following.
If you have both a traditional driver's license and My number card as driving license, you can rent a car by presenting only your traditional driver's license.
*1: A combination of My Number Card and driver's license


<Items required when using My number card as driving license >

  • ・My Number card

  • ・Smartphone device with the "My number card as driving license Reading App (※2)" installed

  • *2: An app for reading driver's license information from My Number cards.
    You can install it from the App Store or Google Play Store.

<How to present your driving license information at the location>

Please note that the process may take longer than for a traditional driver's license.

[1]Launch the "My number card as driving license Reading App" and enable "Display name, etc." on the PIN entry screen.
Enter your [4-digit PIN (set when registering My number card as driving license)] and [Date of birth/Expiration date (year only)/Security code].
[2]The "My number card as driving license Reading App" reads driver's license information from your My Number card.
[3]Staff will check the driving license information displayed on the screen. *3
  • *3: Please note that we may need to temporarily hold your smartphone device in order to verify your driving license information.

<Points to note>

  • ・If the driving license information cannot be read from the My Number card, you will be able to rent a car by checking the driver's license information through My Number Portal.

  • ・We cannot lend cars to customers who only show an photo of your driving license. Please show the screen showing your driving license to the staff. (Screenshots and such are not vaild.)

  • ・Please note that we cannot lend you a vehicle if we cannot verify your driver's license information.

  • ・Please note that you cannot use Nippon Rent-A-Car app to authenticate your identity with My number card as driving license.

  • ・If you wish to pay in cash, you will need to present supporting documentation in addition to your My Number Card.

  • ・Please use your regular driver's license when using outside of Japan.
